About Us

The Carver Campus houses both Carver Primary School and the Phyllis Wheatley Child-Parent-Center.  Three smaller buildings cluster on the north side of 133rd Place
while the larger two-story building sits on the south side of the street.

The total enrollment for Carver/Wheatley Complex is approximately 550. The ethnic
makeup of our student population is 99.8% African-American, 0.1% Caucasian, and 0.1% Hispanic. Our staff consists of 48 teachers, 43 non-instructional staff, and 4 administrative staff members. We service children from preschool through 3rd grade, including 4 special-educational programs. According to the Illinois State School Report Card, 100%
of our students live in a state of poverty.

Carver Primary is located within the confines of the Altgeld-Murray Housing Project.
The community has no major business, nor are any in bordering proximity. It is almost entirely isolated from the world outside the Project. Immediately east of the Project is
the C.I.D. landfill, which accepts garbage and toxic waste. To the northeast are several
smelter operations. The entire north side faces the Chicago Metropolitan Sanitary Plant,
which cleans and dries human waste all year long. A few miles further North is the Sherman-Williams paint plant. To the South is the Dolton Dump on the banks of the
Little Calumet River.
